Estimated Decadal Changes in the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and Heat Flux 1993–2004

چکیده
Results from a global 1° model constrained by least squares to a multiplicity of datasets over the interval 1992–2004 are used to describe apparent changes in the North Atlantic Ocean meridional overturning circulation and associated heat fluxes at 26°N. The least squares fit is both stable and adequately close to the data to make the analysis worthwhile. Changes over the 12 yr are spatially and temporally complex. A weak statistically significant trend is found in net North Atlantic volume flux above about 1200 m, which drops slightly ( 0.19 0.05 Sv yr ; 1 Sv 10 m s ) but with a corresponding strengthening of the outflow of North Atlantic Deep Water and inflow of abyssal waters. The slight associated trend in meridional heat flux is very small and not statistically significant. The month-to-month variability implies that single-section determinations of heat and volume flux are subject to serious aliasing errors.

Arctic–North Atlantic Interactions and Multidecadal Variability of the Meridional Overturning Circulation
Analyses of a 500-yr control integration with the non-flux-adjusted coupled atmosphere–sea ice–ocean model ECHAM5/Max-Planck-Institute Ocean Model (MPI-OM) show pronounced multidecadal fluctuations of the Atlantic overturning circulation and the associated meridional heat transport. The period of the oscillations is about 70–80 yr. The low-frequency variability of the meridional overturning cir...
متن کاملCan global warming affect tropical ocean heat transport?
Tropical meridional ocean heat transport is studied in six coupled ocean-atmosphere models in which atmospheric CO 2 concentration has been increased. In the Indo-Pacific, the strength of Subtropical Cells (STCs) changes in response to changes in the trade winds. However, the change is not consistent among models. In contrast, in all models the tropical Indo-Pacific heat transport remains nearl...
متن کاملProcesses governing the predictability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation in a coupled GCM
The processes that govern the predictability of decadal variations in the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) are investigated in a long control simulation of the ECHO-G coupled atmosphere-ocean model. We elucidate the roles of local stochastic forcing by the atmosphere, and other potential ocean processes, and use our results to build a predictive regression model. The prim...
متن کاملSurface changes in the North Atlantic meridional overturning circulation during the last millennium
Despite numerous investigations, the dynamical origins of the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age remain uncertain. A major unresolved issue relating to internal climate dynamics is the mode and tempo of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation variability, and the significance of decadal-to-centennial scale changes in Atlantic meridional overturning circulation strength in regul...
متن کاملModelling the relationship between 231 Pa / 230 Th distribution in North Atlantic sediment and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
Down-core variations in North Atlantic Paxs / Thxs have been interpreted as changes in the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This modelling study confirms that hypothetical changes in the AMOC would indeed be recorded as changes in the distribution of sedimentary Paxs / Thxs. At different sites in the North Atlantic the changes in sedimentary Pa / Th that we si...
